St. Pete Man Charged in Second Sexual Assault
A man already in jail on sexual assault charges is now facing new charges in a separate case.
The 28-year-old St. Petersburg man has been charged with armed sexual battery in an incident that took place on December 13th in the 600 block 10th Avenue South.
Police claim that the 19-year-old victim was visiting an acquaintance in the area and was walking home when she was approached by the man.
Police alleged that he initially asked to use her cell phone, but then produced a handgun and took her at gunpoint to a secluded area nearby where he sexually assaulted her.
After the suspect left the area, the alleged victim told police she returned to her friend’s house and called 911. Police said the man was identified by DNA evidence.
The man was incarcerated earlier this month in relation to a Dec. 29th sexual assault and auto theft.
Allegations of sexual battery or assault are not only serious due to the criminal liability associated with a conviction, but also due to the damage that accompanies an allegation, regardless of the innocence of the accused. Sadly, in many cases, allegations of sexual assault or battery have very little corroborative evidence. With that said, police and prosecutors will often rely on nothing more than the word of the alleged victim to achieve a conviction. No matter how slim the evidence, a conviction for sexual battery carries a possible 15 year prison sentence and a lifetime registration as a sexual offender. These charges must be taken seriously and must be addressed immediately.
