Man Accused of Secretly Filming Women Shopping in Hernando

On Nov. 24, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Brooksville man for allegedly filming up a woman’s skirt in Wal-Mart using a smartphone. He was charged with video voyeurism.

Police then obtained a search warrant for his mother’s home where they seized his phone, computer and video cards.

According to detectives, evidence shows that the man had shot videos of at least 10 other women in local stores.

Detectives were apparently able to identify six of the women.

On Thursday, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office announced they were charging the 39-year-old man with 27 more counts of video voyeurism, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Police claim the man’s footage was date and time stamped, but it took them some time to identify the correct stores, scan through surveillance video and identify the right women.

All six of the women identified had been shopping at Publix at two different locations. Police are still trying to identify a seventh woman who was at the Warehouse Wine & Liquor store on Oct. 5 around 8:20 p.m.

Additionally, detectives are apparently still looking into incidents that occurred at Kohl’s and Target on Spring Hill Drive.

According to police, none of the women realized they had been filmed until police contacted them.

The man is being held without bail due to earlier incidents over the past couple months.

Generally speaking, the crime of voyeurism is classified as a misdemeanor in Florida. Voyeurism charges can be amplified to felony status if the accused has any previous voyeurism convictions. Video voyeurism, however, has a completely different set of laws. Video voyeurism is usually charged as a felony in the state of Florida.
