A 29-year-old teacher is facing six counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor after she allegedly engaged in sexual activity with a student.
According to a Lakeland police report, the alleged victim’s mother told police on Monday that her son had sex with the woman, who is an English teacher.
The mother claims she discovered the relationship after reviewing text messages from her son. According to police, the woman asked the teacher to come to her home to talk. The teacher admitted to the sexual encounters and professed her love for the teen.
According to the arrest affidavit, the teacher told the mother the two had had sex 20 or 30 times total and that she underwent an abortion after becoming pregnant by him.
According to police, the teacher and the boy texted each other using two different aliases and would meet for sex in the woman’s vehicle.
The teen told detectives that he met the teacher for sex at a Lakeland apartment complex three times and three times at another location off New Tampa Highway within the city limits. In addition, the teen claims they had sex numerous times outside the city’s jurisdiction and within the jurisdiction of Polk and Hillsborough counties.
Police are currently investigating these alleged incidents.
The teacher was arrested at her residence at 11:40 p.m. Monday and taken to the Polk County Jail.
She has been suspended with pay. Polk County schools superintendent has recommended that the school board fire the woman. The board will discuss the issue at its next meeting April 22.
According to reports, the woman was hired as an English teacher Aug. 29, 2011.
