Former City Commissioner Candidate Arrested for Sex Crime

The Alachua County Sherriff’s Office arrested Oswald “Ozzy” Angulo, 30, on election day for sexual assault. He was arrested around 9 p.m. on Tuesday at his home for an alleged incident that happened in July at a woman’s home with the woman and one of her friends.

According to the Gainesville Sun, the woman told police that all three of them had been drinking and she fell asleep in a chair in her living room while her friend and Angulo remained in the room. The woman allegedly woke up to Angulo performing a sex act on her. She supposedly pushed him away and he exited her home.

Angulo was one of 13 candidates who were in the running for three vacancies on the seven-member commission. He was running for the District 3 seat covering mostly southwest Gainesville. He was eliminated from the race in March, receiving 63 votes, 2.28 percent of votes cast. Susan Bottcher won the seat Tuesday.

Florida law has become increasingly strict on any case that is labeled a sex crime. While rape convictions have remained consistent over the past 30 years with significant prison terms, sexual assaults of various forms are now gaining lengthier prison sentences. A sexual assault charge, despite the severity, is a very serious accusation. Florida law can be quite complicated when it comes to sex crimes; you could be guilty of sexual assault even if you never touched the alleged victim. Once prosecutors file charges they seek tough penalties for those accused of sexual assault, or any sex crime in general. Prosecutors’ base most sex crimes cases off of he said she said events that they often use to threaten or pressure people into taking plea bargains. A sexual assault conviction is punishable anywhere from 60 days to 30 years behind bars, along with fines and possible restitution to the victim. A judge could also order mandatory psychiatric evaluations for anyone convicted of sexual assault.
